Don’t Be A Library!! Trim Your Web Site Content

Monday, February 16th, 2009

This one is directed at you Realtors who feel it is necessary to add all the info and links in the universe to your web site. And for any other service industry that is “high touch” where you really need a phone call to initially build trust.

Stop filling your web sites with every link you can find, and with every bit of information about your market or service. If you provide everything on your site, who needs to contact you for further information?

Turn around, and take it the other way! You should already understand landing pages (read up if you don’t) and how to bring targeted traffic to them; now take that skill and kick it up a notch. Bring in the targeted users to the content they want, then give them just enough to wet their appetite but leave them wanting more… so they will have a “need” to contact you for more information.

If they want information on hospitals in your area, are they going to your site or a medical site?

If they want info on schools in your area, are they going to your site or a public education site?

Think about your own user habits, and what would make you contact someone. If you get all the info you need on a topic, do you need to contact anyone for further information? That is what the public library is for! And there is a reason that Twitter only allows a limited number of characters, because our attention spans have grown short over the years…

If I read a good teaser line, I will usually inquire for more information. Your web users have the same tendencies, so give them just enough info to make them want to contact you for more!!
